Module 7: Creating a Website Using Weebly (4 Days)
It used to be that websites were pretty much only created and used for business purposes, and they were only created by professionals. Modern technology has eliminated the need to know about coding and highly technological information. Nowadays, it is common for many people to have their own website, and the reasons are many. Some people have websites to promote and run their business. Others have websites to blog and discuss their passions and interests. Some people create websites in honour of their favourite teams, bands, celebrities, or charities/causes. These are only a few of the reasons why people might create websites.
Now, you will create a website of your own! There is a catch though, because you are a student, you need to be sure to protect your identity and your privacy. This means that you must take great care not to post any information that can reveal your full name, your address, who your family members are, where you live, where you go to school, etc.
Step #1
To begin the process of creating a website, your first step is to create a "junk/SPAM" email account. You are creating this email account so you can register for and create your website. As you probably know, many sites you register for require an email address as part of the setup. You probably already have an email account, but I would like you to set up a separate "junk/SPAM" email account for the purpose of this assignment. You can use an email service like Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo Mail. For consistency, I would encourage you to use the first three letters of your last name, followed by the last three letters of your first name as the front part of your email address. For example, my email address would look like this: [email protected], or [email protected], [email protected]
Step #2
Once you have created your "junk/SPAM" email account, please click on the button below and then watch and read through the following tutorial. There are a number of different links (below the video) to go through before you begin to build your website.

Step #3
Choose a topic for your website (keep it appropriate). Ideas for topics could include:
- favourite sports team or athlete
- favourite band or musician
- favourite TV show or movie
- favourite video games
- favourite hobby/activity
- favourite place(s) on Earth
- Create an online store that sells merchandise or services
Step #4
Research other websites.
- Find 3 websites that are similar to the one you will create (similar topic/theme) and tell me a little bit about what you like about them. (2 sentences for each website)
- What sections do they have that you like and why?
- What sections do you not like, and why not?
- Submit your responses to the questions in Step#4 to me as an email. Please use the subject line: Tech 9: Module 4, Step 4 and send them to [email protected]
Step #5
Decide on your content. What sections will you have? Create a rough draft or mind map of your website and show it to your teacher before you proceed any further.

Because you went through the tutorial in Step #2, you should have a good understanding of how to create your website. Experiment and have fun with it. Your teacher is available to help, and you can play with the layout and formats/themes until you are satisfied. The most important thing to be critical of is the "flow" of your website. Does it make sense, or are there wasted steps and random things on it?
Your website should have at least 3 different pages on it. You can decide what you want to put on those pages, but try to keep similar information on the same page. Think of your pages as "dividers" for your site content, and be sure to use appropriate titles/labels. You can even use my website as an example, because my website was built in Weebly.
Things you might include:
- YouTube video(s) of your topic
- Map
- images/pics that relate to your topic or enhance the visual appeal of your website (the pictures must not be "random")
- a blog section where you comment on your topic (2 - 3 paragraphs, minimum 150 words)-- your own words/thoughts on the topic, not somebody else's
- a comments section where your viewers can comment on your content
- a "Contact" section where viewers can email you
- a page of interesting links about your topic and related information
- links to allow posting to social media sites
There is one additional step that you need to do now. I want you to create a new page within your website and you need to upload/embed the storyboard from Module 5 and the images from Module 6. I even want you to try and upload/embed your monograms from Module 2 and your cookbook from Module 3.
Step #7
Publish your site and email the link for your site to your teacher: [email protected]
